Empathic design is rightly recognized as one of the most important contemporary design disciplines. The ability to observe consumers and look at the world from their perspective leads to the creation of products that respond to their needs, which gives the products themselves a better chance of market success. Moreover, similar methods are starting to be applied elsewhere, including corporate consulting or when designing widely-used financial services. However, such design should not only meet the needs of privileged social groups and generate profits for companies.

In order to face the greatest challenges of modern times, we should return to the roots of empathy, the ability to understand other people, including those who find themselves in difficult situations. At the exhibition “Empathy, now” we exhibit ideas that can help to create better solutions for more than 65 million migrants and refugees, forced to leave their homes, who are now more numerous than after the Second World War. We also look at the problems of those affected by natural disasters. In 2016, this number exceeded 550 million and will probably continue to grow as a result of ongoing climate change. Also not forgotten are the millions of inhabitants of large cities, who, due to gentrification, are finding it increasingly difficult to find a decent place to live. Diverse projects in the field of design, architecture, technology and services presented at the exhibition encourage visitors to get involved. When political capital has been taken over by populists who isolate themselves from global issues, when people are looking inward as opposed to outward, when the typical impulse is to take and not to give – empathy may just be what saves us from ourselves.
