Wrocław will be the sixth and last city to be visited by Cover awArts 2018, the annual contest for best record covers, in which Dizajn BWA Wrocław gallery hosts the festival of well-covered music.
The contest began as a tribute to music and good design, but to some extent also out of contrariness. In 2013, the Fryderyk Prize for Best Graphic Design was no longer awarded. The death of the physical music medium was announced, supposedly to be replaced by mp3 files. Record covers were reduced to microscopic pictures displayed onscreen, and the physical LP was expected to disappear altogether. Against this backdrop, we decided to honour the unsung heroes: designers of record covers, explain the curators of the project. Today’s music industry is entirely different. Record covers have become more professional and music labels promote good designs. A number of artists have begun to specialize in cover design. The music album has also been revived – not only has the vinyl returned, but the editions themselves (especially of hip hop albums) have become much more impressive.
Since 2013, thousands of internet users and a jury of curators of the Cover awArts contest have been selecting the best designs. Over this period 1,108 covers have been submitted and as many as 236,268 votes cast. For the last three editions, the contest has gone beyond the virtual sphere and entered the physical realm. The winning designs may be seen during the exhibition tour of Poland. The large scale allows viewers not only to appreciate the quality of the designs, but also to see the details which normally tend to go unnoticed even by users of physical media.
The exhibition presented at Dizajn gallery crowns the 2018 best-cover contest, in which internet users and experts selected thirty best record covers out of 242 entries. Additionally, the top ten graphic designs will be shown. For the first time in the history of the contest, the winning design is not from a hip hop album. Was the choice obvious? See for yourself – have a trip through the various styles, moods and genres to find out which designs appeal to you. Take a broad look at music design from various perspectives. Celebrate the festival of well-covered music accompanied by the best images and sounds of 2018!
