The International Urban Art Festival OUT OF STH is a project of cyclical presentations of practices referring to urban space and covering activities which often fail to be assimilated by critical artistic discourse.
The sixth edition is devoted to analysing the city as a special urban-social case using patterns of spatial human behaviours in social interaction. We will be looking at spatial contexts, urban enclaves, self-organized flashpoints on the city map, tendencies in grassroots and civic shaping of public space – all collectively responsible for the organization of the city.
The main exhibition, THREE’S A CROWD, will cover areas ranging from Hong Kong to Slavic vixa parties. It will look at modern-day streets and dance floors, examining how bodies form temporary communities through physical presence in public space, how they transform the old reality and create new conditions.
The THREE’S A CROWD exhibition will feature self-choreographing protests, improvised social dances and grassroots forms of kinaesthetic organization of bodies in urban fabric. From Georgia’s rave revolution in 2018, through the political dimension of rave culture and queer aspects of clubbing, to the mechanisms of building social solidarity in the conditions of forced physical isolation and practising pleasure in a crisis situation. At the same time, we will have a look at artists whose work has an activist dimension or has become a training ground for social and political Struggle.
In turn, Terrain Conflict project and exhibition will use the example of Wrocław to emphasize the necessity for a continuous narrative revision of the city and encourage to use mathematical models of human behaviour in processes preventing social antagonisms. What generates a spatial conflict? Can we pinpoint the characteristics of urban areas which increase the likelihood of its occurrence? Can we identify the phenomena which precede it? Or predict when it will break out and whether it will spill over larger areas? The project will include interdisciplinary research of phenomena resulting from limited absorbency of urban areas, as well as local conflicts arising from it.
