Progress. A public programme
Progress is a public programme during which together with our public and invited guests we shall reflect on innovation and change dynamics. We shall talk about what is global but in a local context.
The 19th century is often referred to as the age of innovation. It would be difficult not to agree with that since the number of novelties of that time was actually enormous and the civilizational development advanced with an unprecedented speed. With time, the progress or the innovation became a global obsession. A modification of routines, behavioural patterns or cultural templates resulted in a number of changes that modified our perception of the world. Do we agree with the sociologist Anthony Giddens that those transformations lead to the contemporary world being a runaway world?
The main subject of the meetings will be transport and movement. Rambles on foot, rail and river transport as well as the related urban planning and the ever more modern technological systems will provide food for thought and discussion in the context of society, engineering and technology. During eight meetings we will look at whether or not the advantages from development equal progress and a better life quality.
