Enchantment of the Odra – a walk and concert by the river 

As part of the next meeting of the Progress series, we invite you to an event with the River Odra as its theme. The two-day event will include a walk with Ryszard Majewicz and a concert by Michał Zygmunt. Admission is free. 

The Odra is one of the longest rivers in Europe and is of considerable importance to Wrocław. Over the years, it has been shortened, trimmed and straightened to suit human needs. During the reign of Frederick II the Great, it was the backbone and main route for his state, served as a border after World War II and, more recently, became the victim of an ecological disaster. 

During the walk on Saturday, Ryszard Majewicz, M.Sc. (FOMT – Open Museum of Technology Foundation) will remind us the history of the facilities of Wrocław’s Municipal Canal, the section between the Warsaw Bridges and the Old Odra, as well as the Old Odra itself, up to Szczytniki. We will get to know the curiosities of this little-known section of the canals, technical devices and bridge crossings, and finally reach the FOMT Odra Museum located in the upper outport of the Szczytniki Lock. There, we will hear the story of the Odra ships on the example of the vessels preserved in the Museum. Audioguide-type headsets will be provided during the walk. 

On Sunday, in turn, we invite you to Michał Zygmunt’s concert Odra Sound Design. It will be a multidimensional audio journey inspired by the power of the river. By means of music and sound recordings, we will be taken to the intimate world of the river, its mist and vibrant wildlife. Combining the sounds of nature with electronics and ambient tones of guitars, Michał Zygmunt will oscillate between guitar trance and live-generated electronics. The concert programme reflects the artist’s fascination with sound, from his search for native traditional sources, through acoustic world music inspirations, to ambient and trance rhythms, full of spatial colours and subtle electronics.
